A good friend of mine reminded me that I have been really slack on my blog since New Year. I totally agree - I knew this would happen when I went back to work!
So today, i thought I would redeem myself and introduce you to the chooks. In have 7 hens, 4 Isa Browns, 1 large black hen of indescriminate breed and 2 lovely little black pekin bantams which my friend J kindly gifted Daughter K12 on her birthday.

Here are 3 of the 4 Isa Browns, having a lovely time scratching about:
Now I have to admit that chooks, or indeed any bird if it comes to that, never were my favourite creatures. We had been living here at Springfield for about 7 or 8 years before I thought it would be practical to get chooks.
These birds are different of course, 'cos I'm their Mum and they love me :D Sadly, we haven't gone so far as to name them as so many do, other than the 3 black hens are Big Blacky, Little Blacky & Mummy Blacky. Original, don't you think? Oh and Daughter K18 calls one of the Isa Brown's Louis Vuitton!
Mummy Blacky quickly went clucky and my friends J and G each gave me some fertile eggs to set. On 12 October, 7 chicks hatched - 5 black pekins - 2 pullets, 3 roosters (Daughter K12 chose to set more pekin eggs) and 2 bigger chickens - 1 Isa Black pullet and 1 New Hampshire/Light Sussex cross from G's eggs. Here is Mum with some of the chicks:
Of course, both of my good friends J and G claim to have converted me from a non-chook person to a chook lover. Shhh, don't tell them, but it may well be true!!!
